Jack Welbourne Ceramicist
Cardiff based potter Jack Welbourne, makes a range of reduction-fired tableware. Post-training at Plymouth College of Art and Cardiff Metropolitan University, Jack worked with Joel Stuart-Beck in Gothenburg, Sweden and with Jeremy Steward at Wobage in Herefordshire.
Jack throws his pots using a clay content which he collects and mixes himself, refining materials like wood ash and wild clays to use in slips and glazes. Decoration is made using metal oxides either directly onto the glaze or as a resist which is then washed over the pot. Jack adds textures to the surface of his pots to catch the glaze and divide his design.
“I draw inspiration from ancient Chinese, Korean and medieval English pottery whilst adding a contemporary feel to my work through form, mark making and application of glaze. I will often leave large areas of pots unglazed to contrast the colour and texture of the bare clay.” Jack Welbourne
