Mappa Mundi Hereford’s Curious Map by Sarah Arrowsmith

To modern eyes Mappa Mundi reveals a curious and extraordinary world. Why is east at the top, not north? What are these exotic creatures? Why is Jerusalem at the centre?

This book sets out to answer these questions and others. It guides the modern visitor through the map’s unfamiliar and peculiar landscape, showing how a medieval visitor to the cathedral may have understood it.

Sarah Arrowsmith worked in the Education Department at Hereford Cathedral and became well known for her lively, informative talks about the Mappa Mundi.
