Large, hand thrown, slipware tankard made by Russell Kingston. Boldly decorated in Russell’s distinctively energetic style, this vessel has a fully-glazed interior. Some of the tankards have a half-glazed exterior which exposes the toasted red earthenware.
As a hand-thrown, unique item there may be some slight variation in exact dimensions.
Microwave and dishwasher safe but washing by hand is preferable, please see the care information below.
Russell Kingston Slipware Potter
Based at Lynmouth Pottery, Russell Kingston’s work is inspired by, and continues, a North Devon tradition for making ‘humble’ slipware dating back to medieval times.
Russell’s ethos is that his pots are suitable to be used and enjoyed in everyday life, celebrating the food which is served upon them. With this aim the forms he creates are simple and robust made using a combination of wheel and slab build techniques; dish rims are rolled for strength, handles are pulled from the pot as if they had grown there. The confident way in which Russell uses slip, for example using wet on wet slip to allow feathering, splats and forceful slip trailed hatching marks, reference techniques from the past yet he handles them with a bold, contemporary freshness. The results are very useable pieces which will sit happily within a modern interior or a country cottage.
Russell Kingston’s dishes are made to be used and enjoyed as part of everyday life. They are oven and microwave proof but are not suitable for stove top use.
Although Russell’s pieces will withstand a dishwasher cycle, hand washing is always recommended to keep your piece in prime condition. Please note that forcing pottery from a hot temperature into cold, or taking from freezer to hot oven, can cause thermal shock which can lead to your pottery cracking, so is best avoided.
