Stuart Houghton – Maker Specialising in Porcelain and Wood
Stuart’s work could be described as elegantly understated. His throwing ability and attention to detail makes for tableware which is not only very attractive but incredibly usable too.
Based in Herefordshire, Stuart began his making career in the 1960’s as a student at Birmingham School of Art where he trained as a studio potter. After a break of 35 years to concentrate on his gift manufacturing business, Stuart returned to making his own studio pottery in the early 2000’s, eventually setting up a studio in Ledbury. For a number of years Stuart worked with Gloucestershire potter, Fleen Doran, to develop a range of hand thrown porcelain domestic pottery for the home.
Stuart Houghton has been showing his ceramic work at Tinsmiths since 2008 and, more recently, his wooden chopping boards and table stands – for the multi-talented Stuart is also an accomplished woodworker who makes beautiful acoustic guitars and furniture, using locally sourced wood where possible.
