The walks in this book have been devised with the aim of exploring the area’s past, with each walk passing or visiting features about which some background information is given. These include towns and villages, churches, chapels, prehistoric burial sites, holy wells, hillforts, Roman forts, castles and castle sites, canals, tramroads and railway lines, mills, alms-houses, mansions, reservoirs, along with information about certain individuals. Several of the sites included can only be reached on foot.
